Learn about Co-Occurring Anxiety Disorder
Learn about anxiety disorder & treatment offered at our rehab center
Anxiety disorders are a series of mental health disorders that are characterized by excessive fear, worry, and trepidation. Individuals who struggle with anxiety disorders may experience symptoms that are so distressing that they find it difficult or virtually impossible to meet their daily personal, academic, and/or occupational responsibilities.
Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, specific phobia, social phobia, and separation anxiety disorder are among the more common forms of anxiety disorders. All of these disorders feature symptoms related to fear, worry, and trepidation; the main differences are the causes, severity, and duration of the symptoms. For example, the symptoms of specific phobia will be triggered in the presence or at the thought of a certain object, person, or event; social phobia may lead to distress when meeting people, eating in public, or giving a speech; and the symptoms of panic disorder may occur suddenly with no apparent trigger.
Unfortunately, many individuals who experience anxiety disorders also struggle with a substance use disorder, which is the clinical term for addiction. When a person’s addiction is accompanied by a co-occurring anxiety disorder, the symptoms of the two disorders can make life exponentially worse for him or her. In order to experience true and lasting healing, the individual must receive professional treatment at a program that is prepared to address both disorders.
The good news is that both anxiety disorders and substance use disorders are treatable conditions. At Burkwood Treatment Center, we have developed specialized programming that is designed for men and women who have a primary diagnosis of a substance use disorder and a co-occurring anxiety disorder. While they are establishing a strong foothold in early recovery from addiction, men and women who heal at Burkwood can also receive treatment to help them manage the symptoms of their co-occurring anxiety disorder.
Help a Loved One
Helping a loved one or family member with anxiety get into rehab
When an individual experiences symptoms of an anxiety disorder, the event can be troubling both for the afflicted individual and for his or her friends and family members. Anxiety disorder can cause individuals to act in what appear to be strange ways, and those who care about the afflicted individual are likely to be confused, frustrated, and even frightened by what their loved one is going through.
If you have found yourself in a similar situation, please consider the following:
- It is normal and understandable for you to be concerned and even worried.
- Your loved one is in crisis and needs professional help.
- You must not allow your fears to stop you from taking a few simple yet essential steps.
First, talk to your loved one. Depending upon the type of anxiety disorder that he or she is experiencing, he or she may or may not be able to put the problem into words. What is most important is that you acknowledge that your loved one is struggling, that you express your continued compassion and support, and you provide your loved one with opportunities to talk to you about what he or she is experiencing.
You should also conduct your own research on the symptoms that your loved one has been exhibiting. Contact a mental health support agency in your area, or visit the website of reputable organizations such as the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) or the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Understanding the challenges and possible causes of what your loved one is experiencing can prepare you to provide meaningful assistance.
During your research, also look into the types of treatment that have helped others who were experiencing symptoms similar to what your loved one has been going through. Identify centers that treat people who are dealing with anxiety disorders and substance use disorders. Contact these rehab centers, request information, and, if possible, arrange to tour the facility and meet with treatment representatives.
Having conducted this research, you will now need to speak with your loved one again. Share what you have learned, reaffirm your concern and dedication, and ask for his or her response to the information that you have provided.
Volunteer to make an appointment to visit promising programs, provide transportation, and accompany your loved one on the visit.
Never forget that this can be a frightening experience for your loved one. Addiction and a co-occurring anxiety disorder may make it particularly difficult for your loved one to go to new places, meet new people, and get help. Remain a source of compassion and support throughout the entire process, and plan to be a source of ongoing support during and after he or she is in treatment.
Why Consider Us?
Why consider treatment at Burkwood near Minneapolis & St. Paul, MN
As indicated earlier on this page, anxiety disorders can have a drastic negative impact on the quality of a person’s life.
Being overcome by fear, worry, and trepidation, whether in response to a particular trigger or at random unpredictable times, can severely undermine a person’s best efforts to live a healthy, productive, and satisfying life. In some cases, people who have anxiety disorders are incapable of attending school and/or getting and keeping a job. In other cases, they may feel so overwhelmed that they cannot leave their home.
Suffering distress of this severity and frequency can diminish a person’s ability to take full responsibility for his or her life and can force the afflicted individual to depend upon friends or family members for the basic necessities of life.
When a person who has an anxiety disorder abuses or becomes addicted to alcohol or other drugs, his or her quality of life can decrease exponentially, and he or she may be at risk for myriad additional physical and psychological problems. Without effective professional treatment, a person who struggles with an anxiety disorder and a substance use disorder may not be capable of achieving and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships, establishing a modicum of financial independence, or otherwise enjoying even the most basic pleasures of life.
With proper care, though, he or she can overcome his or her unhealthy compulsions, manage his or her symptoms, and regain his or her ability to live a productive and satisfying life.
